They feel if they can make the good that they do outweigh the bad - that everything will work out in the end. As they stand before God, they will somehow have done enough to get into heaven by their good deeds over shadowing those that were not so good.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Notice it states "not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works". Grace is a gift from God to us, not us somehow earning it. Someone stated that GRACE is an acronym for "Gods Riches At Christ's Expense". It was Jesus that saved us and redeemed us from our hopeless condition, covered in sin.
In verse 10 of Ephesians 2, Paul writes as inspired by the Holy Spirit that we are " God's Workmanship, created in Christ Jesus FOR good works". The "Good Works" come after accepting Christ as Savior. He says we were made for these good works not redeemed by them.
"Created FOR goodworks, not redeemed BY them!
What a difference one word makes - GRACE. We will never fully understand the depth of God's love in this life....
Thank You Jesus, for the unearned gift of GRACE!
