Is the Virginia Tech Tragedy a "Sign of the Times"?

Posted on Sat, Apr 21, 2007

One of the most horrendous tragedies in US History occurred a few days back on the campus of Virginia Tech as 32 people were brutally murdered, with several others injured. These families will never be the same. This university will never be the same...

We must pray that these survivors will somehow through all of the pain, draw closer to God if they know Him. That they will "lean not on their own understanding", but will call on His Holy name for comfort and peace. We pray that if there were individuals touched by this terrible event that don't know Jesus as Savior and Lord, that some how they will reach out to Him in this time of sadness and grief.

The apostle Paul talked about how things would be and people would act in the "last days" in 2 Timothy 3:1-4, "1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, 4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God."

The shooter was obviously a disturbed and sad man. He probably had at least some mental illness. Some might say he was filled with the devil himself to do something so horrible. He changed the lives of many for eternity.

We have to wonder, did he ever hear the good news of the gospel? Did anyone ever share with him the greatest message on earth? What if they had....

How do we as Christians respond to such evil? We saw the outpouring of prayer after this tragedy on campus and in local churches. We must pray for the families and friends left behind, we must pray for those still recovering, we must pray for the family of the killer as they will need it more than many...

We as Christians must live out the "fruit of the spirit" daily that Paul describes in Galatians 5:22-25 "22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit".

The fruit of the Spirit being lived out in our lives brings light through Jesus Christ into dark places and times. We have to show that light in the days ahead as the darkness appears to be ever increasing. You never know what other lives you will "change for eternity" the way God intended by letting your light so shine...

Please pray for those who suffered loss in the days ahead.
